**New Delhi, December 3:** On the eve of Navy Day, Admiral D.K. Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), announced the Indian Navy is ready for significant expansion and transformation. In an exclusive interview with Nitiin A. Gokhale of *Bharatshakti*, the Admiral highlighted the Navy’s modernization plans and future capabilities.
Navy Day, observed annually on December 4th, commemorates the 1971 war’s successful Karachi port attack. Admiral Tripathi revealed the current fleet strength stands at 129 ships and submarines, emphasizing future expansion of combat capabilities. While acknowledging that the numerical target isn’t yet met, he stressed significant improvements in tonnage and technological advancement of existing vessels.
The Admiral expressed confidence in the Navy’s modernization, stating it will accelerate over the next five years, aiming to incorporate an average of one ship or submarine monthly in the coming year. He underlined the increased focus on indigenous construction, a defining characteristic for the Navy over the next five decades. Currently, 63 ships and submarines are under construction in Indian shipyards, with two additional vessels being built in Russia.
Admiral Tripathi reiterated the Navy’s commitment to maintaining a secure and stable Indian Ocean Region, supporting India’s maritime and national security. He also emphasized assistance to friendly nations when needed. Modernization plans include advanced technology for underwater operations and unmanned systems, with ongoing projects encompassing underwater systems and drone technology. He highlighted the role of indigenous capabilities, stating that domestically developed hunter drones will enhance operational range and endurance, furthering self-reliance.
The Admiral underscored the Navy’s commitment to protecting maritime interests, not only for India but also for neighboring countries. He reaffirmed the Navy’s dedication to a secure Indian Ocean, strengthening regional partnerships and providing assistance to friendly nations.
