**Sadavali, Dec 5:** Athlye-Sapre-Pitre College in Sadavali commemorated Indian Navy Day with a program highlighting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s pioneering role in establishing a planned navy in the 17th century. The event, organized by the Devarukh Shikshan Prasarak Mandal, began with a tribute at the college’s Shaheed Smarak (Martyrs’ Memorial) by officers and cadets of the 2nd Maharashtra Naval Unit NCC, Ratnagiri.
The program included insightful lectures. Prof. Seema Shetye addressed junior college students, detailing the contributions of women in the Indian Navy, from their role in the freedom struggle to the achievements of contemporary female officers like Dr. Barbara Ghosh, the first woman to achieve the rank of Commander. Prof. Dhananjay Dalvi delivered a lecture on the history, present, and future of the Indian Navy, covering its establishment, motto, fleet, and recent strides toward self-reliance.
The event was attended by college faculty, staff, and NCC cadets, and underscored the importance of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s naval foresight and the crucial role of women in the Indian Navy’s history and present.
