**Mangaluru, December 6, 2024** – Mangaluru City Police have arrested a 25-year-old Delhi resident, Gaurav Makwan, for his alleged involvement in a WhatsApp-based bank fraud. Makwan is suspected to be part of a gang that defrauds victims by sending malicious Android Package Kit (APK) files disguised as traffic challans.
The arrest follows a complaint filed by a Mangaluru resident who lost ₹1.3 lakh after opening such a file. The fraudulent purchases included expensive electronics and online vouchers totaling the mentioned amount. Police acted swiftly, contacting Flipkart to prevent delivery of the purchased items. A team tracked Makwan to Delhi, arresting him upon receiving the goods. Seized from his possession were five iPhones 15, two Android phones, and two AirPods, valued at ₹4 lakh.
The investigation is ongoing, with police searching for other gang members and exploring Makwan’s potential involvement in other crimes. He has been remanded to Mangaluru District Prison for 15 days. A separate incident in Udupi saw a 69-year-old resident lose ₹3.83 lakh in a similar scam. Police urge citizens to exercise caution when opening unknown files received via messaging apps.
