**Vellore, December 6, 2024** – Construction began Thursday on a new ₹8.41 crore causeway and two check dams across the Kaundinya River in Vellore and Tirupattur districts, bringing much-needed relief to local farmers and improving transportation. Water Resources Minister Durai Murugan officiated at the groundbreaking ceremony, attended by the Collectors of Vellore and Tirupattur.
The 104.2-meter-long causeway in Gudiyatham, funded under the Permanent Floods Restoration Scheme 2023-24 and supported by NABARD, is designed to alleviate traffic congestion. With a capacity to discharge 58,000 cusecs of rainwater per minute, it will prevent flooding and ensure 24/7 access for motorists, including emergency vehicles. Approximately 90,000 residents will benefit from improved transportation, particularly during emergencies.
Simultaneously, two check dams in Kathavalam and Periyankuppam villages will be constructed at a cost of ₹10 crore. These dams aim to recharge 180 farm wells, irrigating 1,226 acres of farmland across 15 villages in Ambur taluk.
All three projects are slated for completion by 2025. Officials emphasized the significant positive impact these infrastructure improvements will have on the agricultural sector and overall quality of life in the region.
