**New Delhi, December 6, 2024** – The Indian government announced a significant expansion of its Kendriya Vidyalayas (KV) and Navodaya Vidyalayas (NV) school systems today. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved the establishment of 85 new KVs and 28 new NVs, representing a major investment in education infrastructure.
The expansion of the KV system, costing an estimated ₹5,872.08 crore over eight years, will accommodate an additional 82,560 students and create 5,388 new permanent jobs. This includes an expansion of an existing KV in Shivamogga. The current KV network includes 1,256 schools with nearly 13.56 lakh students.
The new NVs, to be built in districts currently lacking them, will require an investment of ₹2,359.82 crore over five years and will benefit an estimated 15,680 students, generating 1,316 new jobs. Currently, 653 of the 661 sanctioned NVs are operational, educating 49,640 students.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw briefed the media on the Cabinet’s decision. The government anticipates the expansion will significantly improve access to quality education across the country.
