Fri Dec 06 15:10:27 UTC 2024: ## NASA Astronauts Extend ISS Stay After Starliner Malfunction
**Houston, TX** – NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore are nearing the end of an unexpectedly long stay at the International Space Station (ISS). Initially slated for a one-week test flight aboard Boeing’s Starliner capsule, a series of technical issues including thruster failures and helium leaks stranded the duo on the ISS for six months, with two more to go. The Starliner subsequently returned to Earth on September 7th without them.
Williams and Wilmore, originally temporary visitors, transitioned to full-time crew members, undertaking vital spacewalks, ISS maintenance, and scientific research. The extended mission has taken a toll on Williams’ health, with recent images showing significant weight loss – a common consequence of prolonged exposure to microgravity. SpaceX’s Falcon-9 spacecraft is now scheduled to return them to Earth in February 2025.
Despite the challenges, Williams celebrated her 59th birthday aboard the ISS in September, marking her second space birthday. She also sent Diwali greetings to the world from her unique vantage point. NASA released a video showcasing the astronauts’ lighter moments during their extended mission.
