Thu Dec 05 05:59:50 UTC 2024: ## UnitedHealthcare CEO Gunned Down in Manhattan

**New York, NY –** UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, 50, was fatally shot Wednesday morning in Midtown Manhattan in what police are calling a targeted attack. The masked gunman, who remains at large, ambushed Thompson as he walked to the company’s annual investor conference.

Security camera footage shows the shooter approaching Thompson from behind, firing multiple shots from a pistol, and briefly clearing a malfunction before fleeing across a pedestrian plaza and into Central Park on a bicycle. Despite a large-scale search involving drones, helicopters, and K-9 units, the suspect has not been apprehended.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated that the shooting was not random, noting the gunman appeared to wait for Thompson. Police released surveillance images of the suspect, who was wearing a hooded jacket and a mask. A $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction. Investigators have recovered shell casings and a cellphone at the scene and are examining Thompson’s hotel room, interviewing colleagues, and reviewing his social media. Initial reports that the suspect used a CitiBike were later corrected by Lyft.

Thompson’s wife, Paulette, revealed that he had received unspecified threats, possibly related to insurance coverage. However, the Minneapolis police department reported no prior threats on file.

UnitedHealth Group, UnitedHealthcare’s parent company, issued a statement expressing grief and cooperation with the NYPD. The investor conference was prematurely ended following the incident. Thompson, a father of two, had been with UnitedHealthcare since 2004 and served as CEO for over three years. The company is the largest provider of Medicare Advantage plans in the U.S. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz offered condolences to Thompson’s family and the UnitedHealthcare team. The investigation is ongoing.
