**New Delhi, December 5, 2024** – The King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, and Queen Jetsun Pema concluded a visit to India today, reaffirming strong bilateral ties with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Discussions focused on key infrastructure projects, particularly the Gelephu Mindfulness City project and hydropower initiatives.
The joint statement following the meeting highlighted India’s continued support for the Gelephu project, emphasizing its potential to boost prosperity and economic links between the two nations. The Adani Group’s involvement in the Gelephu project, including solar and hydropower ventures, was also implicitly acknowledged, despite recent controversies surrounding the group. While other neighboring countries have reviewed Adani projects, Bhutan has not publicly commented on the matter.
The visit comes at a time of shifting geopolitical dynamics in the region. India’s relations with Bangladesh have been strained since the change in government in August, and Nepal has recently strengthened ties with China. The Bhutanese King’s visit and India’s commitment to the Gelephu project are seen as significant gestures of continued collaboration amidst these challenges.
Progress on hydropower projects was also a key topic of discussion, with both sides expressing satisfaction with the nearing completion of the Punatsangchhu-II project and pledging to expedite the Punatsangchhu-I project. Further cooperation on cross-border connectivity, including rail and digital networks, was also agreed upon. The visit follows a recent trip by Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay to India.
