Fri Dec 06 11:44:09 UTC 2024: ## 16-Year-Old Indian Achieves Historic Antarctic Ascent

**Hyderabad, Telangana, December 6, 2024** – Padakanti Vishwanath Karthikey, a 16-year-old student from Hyderabad, has made history by becoming the youngest Indian to summit Mount Vinson Massif, the highest peak in Antarctica (16,050 ft). Karthikey, part of the ‘Boots & Crampons-Elite Exped team’ led by Nirmal Purja, conquered the peak on November 26th, 2024.

Inspired by the pandemic lockdowns at age 11, Karthikey’s mountaineering journey began with an attempt on Mount Rudugaira in Uttarakhand, followed by an attempt on Mount Elbrus in Europe. Despite setbacks, including a failed summit attempt and a teammate’s fainting incident, he persevered, honing his skills under the mentorship of Bharath and Lt. Romil Barthwal.

After travelling to Punta Arenas, Chile, and undergoing acclimatization training, Karthikey successfully navigated the extreme weather conditions of Antarctica to reach the summit. His achievement is seen not only as a remarkable feat of mountaineering but also as a testament to his determination and resilience.

Mentors have emphasized the character-building aspects of Karthikey’s journey, highlighting the life lessons learned through facing and overcoming challenges. Looking ahead, the young mountaineer plans to climb Aconcagua in South America in January and Mount Everest in May 2025, aiming to complete the prestigious Seven Summits Challenge. His parents, Rajendera Prasad and Laxmi, have been unwavering in their support, embodying the belief that pursuing one’s passion leads to fulfillment and success.
