Fri Dec 06 12:09:55 UTC 2024: ## Rural School’s Birdwatching Project Takes Flight: Students Document 75 Species
**COIMBATORE, INDIA – December 6, 2024** – Students at the Yellow Train School in Mudalipalayam, Tamil Nadu, have documented 75 bird species on their 10-acre campus, showcasing a remarkable increase from the 43 species recorded six years ago. This year’s project, inspired by a trip to the Vellode bird sanctuary, involved meticulous observation and identification, using the common bulbul as a size reference point.
The initiative, spearheaded by teachers P Priya and Auxilia Helen P, integrated birding into existing farming classes. Students noted bird size, plumage color, and behavior, cross-referencing their findings with the Coimbatore Nature Society. The project culminated in a campus “Bird Wall” featuring student drawings of the identified species.
The school’s rich biodiversity, including a thriving weaver bird population nesting in a well, has contributed to the success of the project. The project underscores the school’s commitment to environmental education and hands-on learning, transforming a simple birding exercise into a valuable conservation effort. The students’ detailed observations and artwork will serve as a lasting record of the school’s avian biodiversity.
