**NEW DELHI, December 5, 2024** – Several major Bangladeshi opposition parties met with Chief Adviser Mohammad Yunus on Wednesday, urging him to hold early elections. The meeting, the largest of its kind under the interim government, excluded the ruling Awami League and its allies.
The opposition parties, including the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami, voiced concerns about what they described as “aggression against the nation” and sought strategies to address it. BNP’s Amir Khosru Mahmud Choudhury stated that an early election would boost public enthusiasm and benefit the country.
A key focus of the meeting was the strained relationship with India, particularly following vandalism at the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala. The opposition accused certain Indian media outlets of spreading harmful propaganda and alleged Indian interference in Bangladesh’s internal affairs. They called for the review and potential cancellation of agreements signed with India over the past 15 years.
Law affairs advisor Asif Nazrul, a spokesperson for the interim government, described the Awami League as “fascist” and stated that all other parties participated in the meeting, unified in their commitment to protecting Bangladesh’s sovereignty. He echoed the accusations of Indian interference and economic harassment. Some opposition parties also proposed establishing a public relations cell to counter negative narratives from India and a special committee to address the concerns of minority communities. While Chief Adviser Yunus has previously met with opposition parties, this meeting marks a significant development in the political landscape following the Awami League’s removal from power in August. The future involvement of the Awami League in any future elections remains uncertain.
