Thu Dec 05 15:26:05 UTC 2024: ## Uttar Pradesh Police Detain Farmers Ahead of Planned Delhi Protest

**Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, December 5, 2024** – Uttar Pradesh police have detained dozens of farmers in Greater Noida as they attempted to begin a protest march towards Delhi. Farmers, affiliated with the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), are protesting against alleged land acquisition injustices and demanding increased compensation.

According to farmer accounts, police have surrounded villages near Greater Noida, preventing farmers from joining the “Delhi Chalo” protest. Farmers report instances of intimidation and house arrests, with claims of police entering homes and detaining individuals, including a heart patient. One farmer, Vinod Sarpanch, stated he was detained and taken for a medical check-up despite a pre-existing foot injury.

While Additional CP (law & order) Shivhari Meena stated that 34 individuals were detained on Wednesday night for protesting without permission and subsequently jailed, he denied claims of widespread arrests and detentions. He asserted that police presence in villages was for dialogue and preventative measures. However, farmers maintain that police actions are aimed at suppressing the protest.

The SKM alleges the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister is misusing police power, violating farmers’ rights. The SKM plans a national coordination committee meeting on December 6th to strategize further actions in response to the alleged police crackdown. The farmers’ anger over what they perceive as police oppression and denial of their rights is growing, with the movement vowing to continue despite the detentions.
