Wed Dec 04 18:29:08 UTC 2024: ## Indian Navy Day Celebrated Amidst Global Naval Power Rankings

**New Delhi, Dec 4** – India celebrated its Navy Day on December 4th, commemorating the courage and dedication of the Indian Navy, particularly its pivotal role in the 1971 Indo-Pak war. The day, officially adopted in 1972, serves to recognize the Navy’s achievements and contributions to national security.

This year’s celebrations come against the backdrop of renewed interest in global naval power rankings. The United States Navy remains the world’s most powerful, boasting an unmatched reach and technological advantage despite having a smaller fleet than China. The US Navy commands 11 aircraft carriers, 10 helicopter carriers, and a formidable arsenal of warships and submarines, backed by a massive $877 billion budget.

China’s People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), though possessing the world’s largest fleet (730 vessels) and a robust $292 billion budget, ranks second in overall firepower according to the Global Firepower Index. While its sheer size is impressive, its technological sophistication and overall reach lag behind the US Navy.

India’s Navy, currently ranked seventh globally, is rapidly modernizing and expanding its capabilities. It operates two aircraft carriers (INS Vikramaditya and INS Vikrant), possesses 12 destroyers, several submarines (including three nuclear-capable ones), and is set to acquire Rafale M fighter jets and three more Scorpène submarines. Simultaneous construction of 62 vessels, including a submarine, underscores India’s ambitious expansion plans, aiming for a fleet of 155-160 warships by 2030. The Indian Navy’s origins trace back to the East India Company in 1612, with significant restructuring and modernization following India’s independence.
