Wed Dec 04 18:05:32 UTC 2024: ## Congress MPs Demand Legislation to Protect Gig Workers

**New Delhi, December 5, 2024** – Congress MPs Manickam Tagore and Shashi Tharoor have urged the Indian government to enact legislation protecting gig economy workers, highlighting concerns over unfair wages, unsafe working conditions, and the lack of social security benefits.

Raising the issue in the Lok Sabha, Mr. Tagore specifically cited the plight of Amazon India workers, who are protesting against low wages (less than ₹10,000 per month) and unmet promises of provident fund and insurance. He framed the issue as a human rights concern, emphasizing the need for fair wages, job security, and social benefits for all gig workers.

Mr. Tharoor echoed these concerns, adding the urgent need to enforce existing laws regarding work hours. He cited the recent death of a young chartered accountant due to overwork as a tragic example of the systemic failure to prioritize work-life balance. He stressed the importance of protecting professionals who contribute significantly to India’s economic growth.

Both MPs called on Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya to address these issues and implement necessary changes to protect the rights and well-being of gig workers.
