Wed Dec 04 14:42:24 UTC 2024: ## 5.0 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Telangana, Tremors Felt Across Region

**Hyderabad, December 4, 2024** – A moderate earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale struck Medaram in Telangana’s Mulugu district this morning at 7:27 a.m. IST. Tremors were felt in Hyderabad and surrounding districts, over 200 kilometers away. While the earthquake is the second largest recorded in the region in the last 55 years, officials assure the public there is no cause for alarm.

According to the CSIR-National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), the quake’s epicenter was located approximately 250 kilometers from Hyderabad. NGRI Director Prakash Kumar explained that the largest earthquake in the region was a 5.7 magnitude event in Bhadrachalam in 1969. He attributed the tremors felt across a wide area to the density and composition of the local rock formations.

Kumar emphasized that these are not “big earthquakes” and such seismic activity is typical of the Godavari Rift Basin, a known fault zone. He stated that the NGRI, established in 1961, continuously monitors seismic activity in the region and confirmed that all their stations recorded the earthquake in real-time. The institute’s research includes studying earthquake hazards and exploring geo-resources. The director reassured the public, advising them not to worry about the relatively moderate quake.
