Tue Dec 03 13:30:50 UTC 2024: ## Ruling Party Lawmaker Indicted in South Korean Election Scandal

**Changwon, South Korea (IANS) —** A former five-term lawmaker from South Korea’s ruling People Power Party (PPP), Kim Young-sun, and political broker Myung Tae-kyun were indicted Tuesday on charges of violating the Political Funds Act. The Changwon District Prosecutors’ Office announced the indictments, alleging that Kim paid Myung ₩80.7 million ($57,540) between August 2022 and November 2023 to secure his nomination in the 2022 parliamentary by-elections. The payments were allegedly facilitated through Kim’s campaign finance officer.

Prosecutors accuse Myung of leveraging his alleged connections to President Yoon Suk Yeol and his wife to solicit bribes in exchange for promising candidate nominations. This action, according to the Political Funds Act, is illegal. The investigation, which last week included a raid on PPP headquarters, is ongoing and centers on allegations of influence-peddling within the ruling party. Both Kim and Myung are currently in detention.
