Tue Dec 03 19:12:05 UTC 2024: ## Maharashtra’s New Government Formation Faces Delays Amidst Allegations and Speculation

**Mumbai, December 4, 2023** – The formation of Maharashtra’s new government following the Mahayuti alliance’s landslide victory is facing delays amidst swirling allegations of corruption, health concerns, and speculation over the chief ministerial candidate. While the swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for December 5th, the chief minister remains unannounced.

A Shiv Sena leader, Kiran Pawaskar, revealed that a consensus has emerged among BJP leaders and Mahayuti allies to exclude ministers facing serious corruption allegations from the new cabinet. The final portfolio allocation will be decided after the BJP legislature party elects its leader on Wednesday.

Adding to the uncertainty, caretaker Chief Minister Eknath Shinde was hospitalized with a viral throat infection, sparking further speculation about his role in the new government. While Shiv Sena leaders insist Shinde will attend the swearing-in, Union Minister Ramdas Athawale suggested Devendra Fadnavis will become CM, with Shinde potentially taking on a presidential role within the alliance. BJP’s central observer, Vijay Rupani, confirmed a legislative party meeting for Wednesday, hinting at a unanimous decision on the party leader.

The opposition Congress party, meanwhile, met with the Election Commission, expressing concerns over alleged inconsistencies in the election results and raising questions about EVM integrity. They claim the government was formed due to influence from Delhi and does not represent the will of the people. Similar concerns were voiced by other opposition parties, including the Shiv Sena (UBT), who have called for a deeper investigation into irregularities. The Election Commission has warned of legal action against those spreading unsubstantiated claims of EVM tampering.

The delay has drawn criticism, with Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders Aaditya and Priyanka Chaturvedi calling the situation an “insult” to the mandate and questioning the BJP’s unilateral announcement of the swearing-in date before even formally staking a claim to form the government. Sanjay Raut even suggested President’s rule should be imposed.

The ongoing situation leaves Maharashtra in a state of political flux as the nation awaits the announcement of its new chief minister.
