Tue Dec 03 13:54:44 UTC 2024: ## Bangladesh Summons Indian Envoy After Tripura Consulate Incident

**DHAKA, BANGLADESH** – Tensions between India and Bangladesh escalated today after Bangladesh summoned India’s High Commissioner to Dhaka following a security incident at the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Agartala, Tripura. The incident, which occurred yesterday, saw approximately 50 protesters breach the consulate’s premises following the arrest of a Hindu monk in Agartala.

Bangladesh closed its visa and consular office in Agartala citing security concerns and accused Indian authorities of failing to adequately protect its diplomatic mission. The acting foreign secretary, Reaz Hamidullah, summoned Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma to the Foreign Ministry Office in Dhaka to address the matter.

Following the meeting, the Indian High Commissioner stated that India and Bangladesh share a multifaceted relationship and that the incident should not overshadow the broader cooperation between the two nations. He emphasized India’s commitment to a positive and constructive relationship, highlighting ongoing collaborations in trade, power transmission, and the supply of essential commodities. He also reiterated India’s willingness to work with the interim government in Bangladesh.

The incident follows a series of reported attacks and arrests targeting the Hindu minority community in Bangladesh, a matter India has previously raised with Bangladeshi authorities. While the Indian Ministry of External Affairs expressed regret over the incident and stated that it is taking steps to enhance security at Bangladeshi diplomatic missions in India, the summoning of the envoy underscores the seriousness of the situation and the strain on bilateral relations. Increased police presence has been deployed at the Bangladesh mission in Agartala.
