Wed Dec 04 14:06:55 UTC 2024: ## Ernakulam Schools Go Solar in Energy Efficiency Project

**KOCHI, December 4, 2024** – Fifty-eight government schools in Ernakulam district will be equipped with solar panels as part of a new energy efficiency initiative. The ₹1.2 crore “Sooryaprabha” project, launched Tuesday at the Government Higher Secondary School in Cheranalloor, aims to make schools energy independent.

A 7kW solar system installed at the Cheranalloor school will generate surplus energy, which will be sold to the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) grid. Ernakulam District Panchayat President Manoj Moothedan expects this to result in zero electricity costs for participating schools. The system eliminates the need for battery storage, utilizing the KSEB grid directly. Surplus energy generated during holidays and summer vacations will also be sold to the KSEB, further reducing school expenses. Installation in the remaining schools is expected to commence shortly.
