**Chennai, December 4, 2024** – The Tamil Nadu government has announced a comprehensive relief package for those affected by Cyclone Fengal, which recently battered several districts in the state. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin chaired a review meeting on Tuesday, outlining the assistance program.
Families in Villupuram, Cuddalore, and Kallakurichi districts, hardest hit by the cyclone, will receive ₹2,000 in immediate relief. A solatium of ₹5 lakh will be provided to the families of each of the twelve individuals who perished due to the cyclone and related incidents, including seven deaths caused by a landslide in Tiruvannamalai.
Further compensation includes ₹10,000 for those whose huts were destroyed or damaged, with priority given to beneficiaries of the Kalaignar Kanavu Illam Scheme. Crop damage compensation will vary depending on the type of crop and the extent of loss, ranging from ₹8,500 to ₹22,500 per hectare. Compensation for livestock losses is also included, with ₹37,500 for cattle, ₹4,000 for sheep, and ₹100 per poultry bird.
The state government will organize special camps to facilitate the verification of essential documents for affected individuals. New textbooks will be provided to students whose books were damaged by the floods.
Chief Minister Stalin has appealed to the central government for additional assistance and requested a central team to assess the damage. He spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who expressed concern and offered support. DMK MP T.R. Baalu also raised the issue in the Lok Sabha, highlighting the extensive damage, including the destruction of roads, bridges, houses, and the loss of livestock. The extent of the damage, according to Baalu, includes 9,576 km of damaged roads, 1,847 damaged small bridges, 2,416 washed-away huts, 721 damaged houses, and 963 dead cattle. The government is actively working on relief and restoration efforts across the affected areas.
