Wed Dec 04 03:09:00 UTC 2024: ## India Celebrates Navy Day, Commemorating 1971 Victory and Showcasing Modern Strength
**NEW DELHI** – India celebrated Navy Day on December 4th, commemorating the resounding victory of the Indian Navy during the 1971 Indo-Pak war. The day marks the anniversary of Operation Trident, a daring night raid on Karachi harbor on December 3rd, 1971, where Indian naval forces inflicted significant damage on Pakistani ships and oil tankers. The attack, involving missile boats and warships, resulted in a devastating fire at the Karachi fuel depot that raged for seven days and was visible from 60 kilometers away.
This decisive victory, showcasing the Indian Navy’s prowess in using anti-ship missiles, solidified its place as a significant force. The 2024 Navy Day theme, “Power and Pride through Innovation and Indigenisation,” reflects the Navy’s commitment to technological advancement.
Celebrations included wreath-laying ceremonies at war memorials, and displays of naval strength featuring submarines, ships, and aircraft. The Western Naval Command, headquartered in Mumbai, organized a Beating Retreat ceremony at the Gateway of India.
The Indian Navy, comprising the Western, Eastern, and Southern Naval Commands, is currently the fourth largest navy globally. Its arsenal includes two aircraft carriers, INS Vikramaditya and INS Vikrant, along with numerous modern warships, submarines, and aircraft. India’s continuous development of destroyers and submarines, including the recently commissioned INS Vela – touted as a silent killer – demonstrates its commitment to bolstering maritime capabilities in the Indian Ocean region. The article highlighted that the Indian Navy is actively countering the growing presence of China in the region.
The Indian Navy’s history traces back to 1612, initially established by the East India Company. After evolving through various names, it became the Indian Navy in 1950. Its motto, “Shano Varunah,” translates to “May Varuna, the God of the Sea, be auspicious to us.” The Navy plays a crucial role in safeguarding India’s maritime borders.
