Tue Dec 03 17:32:30 UTC 2024: ## Modi Attends Parliament Screening of Controversial Film “The Sabarmati Report”
**New Delhi** – Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several senior BJP MPs attended a special screening of the film “The Sabarmati Report” at Parliament House on Monday. The screening, organized by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, was followed by a dinner. The film purports to reveal the truth behind the 2002 Sabarmati Express fire incident in Godhra, which triggered widespread communal violence in Gujarat. PM Modi was Gujarat’s Chief Minister at the time.
The event drew criticism from opposition MPs, who boycotted the screening. TMC MP Saket Gokhale called the film “propaganda” and questioned the timing, suggesting it was inappropriate given ongoing allegations against the Prime Minister regarding the Godhra incident. Congress MP Manish Tewari, a former I&B minister, stated that such screenings within the Parliament complex were unprecedented during his tenure. He noted that screenings for MPs typically occurred at a separate auditorium, not within the Parliament building itself.
While this is not the first instance of a film being screened in Parliament (a screening of “Rocketry: The Nambi Effect” took place in 2022), the choice of film and the context surrounding the Godhra incident have sparked significant controversy. The opposition’s absence highlights the deep political divisions surrounding the events of 2002 and the ongoing debate about the film’s narrative.
