**Madurai, Tamil Nadu –** Madurai Corporation officials seized approximately five tonnes of banned plastic covers from a truck on Tuesday, December 3rd, 2024. The covers, found to be below the legally mandated 20-micron thickness, were confiscated near Yannaikal following a tip-off about their transportation.
According to H. Alavudeen, sanitary inspector of ward 49, the possession of such covers is an offense under a 2021 Tamil Nadu state government ban on the production and use of thin plastic. The seized plastic, estimated to be worth ₹5 lakh, will be repurposed for use in cement factories or road construction.
The transport manager responsible for booking and transporting the banned material was fined ₹50,000. Investigations indicate the plastic originated from a factory in Erode district, and further action is planned against both the manufacturer and the individual who booked the shipment from Erode to Madurai. Officials stated that while regular checks on outlets and eateries continue, large-scale seizures like this are crucial in disrupting the wider distribution network of illegal plastic covers.
