**NEW DELHI** – Prime Minister Narendra Modi viewed the film “The Sabarmati Report” on Monday, marking his first cinematic experience since assuming office, according to attendees. The screening, held at the Parliament library’s Balyogi Auditorium, was attended by several cabinet ministers, including Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh, along with MPs from the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Bollywood actors Jeetendra and Raashii Khanna, who features in the film, were also present.
“The Sabarmati Report” purports to reveal the truth behind the 2002 Sabarmati Express fire incident in Godhra, Gujarat, which killed 59 Hindu pilgrims returning from Ayodhya. The incident, which sparked widespread communal violence, has been a subject of intense political debate for decades. While the state police under Modi’s chief ministership blamed a Muslim mob, an earlier enquiry commission had attributed the fire to an accident. This finding was later overturned by the Gujarat High Court.
Lead actor Vikrant Massey described the experience of watching the film with PM Modi as “unforgettable,” while PM Modi himself praised the film’s makers on X (formerly Twitter) for their efforts. Several BJP-ruled states have declared the film tax-free, suggesting official support for the project. The screening comes amidst ongoing political discussions surrounding the events of 2002 and their interpretation.
