**Busan, South Korea** – International efforts to forge a global treaty to combat plastic pollution ended in failure on Sunday, with negotiations postponed indefinitely. The fifth United Nations Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5) meeting, intended to finalize a legally binding agreement, was unable to overcome deep divisions between nations.
Over 100 countries pushed for a cap on plastic production, while a smaller group, including notably Saudi Arabia, resisted such measures, focusing instead on managing plastic waste. Accusations flew that Saudi Arabia employed delaying tactics to prevent the adoption of stricter production limits.
A proposed plan from Panama, which would have established a pathway for global production reduction targets, gained significant international support but ultimately failed to garner consensus. The lack of agreement led to sharp criticism. Juan Carlos Monterrey Gomez, head of Panama’s delegation, declared, “Every day of delay is a day against humanity. Postponing negotiations does not postpone the crisis.”
The postponement is a major setback. With plastic production projected to triple by 2050, environmental groups expressed deep concern. Greenpeace’s Graham Forbes stated, “Every day that governments allow polluters to continue flooding the world with plastic, we all pay the price. This delay comes with dire consequences.” GAIA, another environmental group, voiced skepticism about the success of future negotiations.
The failure comes on the heels of the COP29 climate conference, where pledges to address climate change fell significantly short of developing nations’ requests. The postponement of the plastic treaty negotiations underscores the ongoing challenges in achieving global cooperation on critical environmental issues.
