Sun Dec 01 17:47:02 UTC 2024: ## Mumbai Police File FIR Against Man Claiming EVM Hacking Ability

**Mumbai, India – December 1, 2024** – The Mumbai Cyber Police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Syed Shuja for allegedly making false claims about hacking electronic voting machines (EVMs). The complaint, filed on November 30th, stems from a video circulating on social media where Shuja claims he can compromise EVMs by isolating their frequency.

The FIR, registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the IT Act, was initiated following a complaint by the Maharashtra chief electoral officer (CEO). The CEO deemed Shuja’s claims “false, baseless, and unsubstantiated.” This is not Shuja’s first offense; a similar FIR was filed against him in Delhi in 2019 for similar claims, with the individual now reportedly residing outside of India.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) reiterated its stance that EVMs are standalone, tamper-proof machines incapable of network connection. The ECI emphasized that this assertion has been repeatedly upheld by the Supreme Court. Both Delhi and Mumbai police are actively investigating the matter and pursuing those in India potentially collaborating with Shuja. The ECI has vowed to prosecute all involved in these “malicious activities.”
