Sun Dec 01 06:36:38 UTC 2024: ## Cyclone Fengal Makes Landfall in Puducherry, Causes Widespread Disruption Across Tamil Nadu
**Chennai, India – November 30, 2024** – Cyclone Fengal made landfall on the Puducherry coast at 7 pm on Saturday, bringing heavy rainfall, strong winds, and widespread disruption to Tamil Nadu and surrounding areas. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for several districts, warning of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall.
The cyclone, packing wind speeds of 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph, caused significant flooding in Puducherry, with vehicles submerged and the Union Territory experiencing flood-like conditions. The Indian Army conducted rescue operations, evacuating over 100 people. Sadly, at least three people were electrocuted in rain-related incidents in Chennai.
Chennai airport suspended operations until 4 am on December 1st due to the severe weather, leading to flight cancellations and diversions. One passenger reported being stranded for 12 hours. IndiGo, however, announced the resumption of its operations following improved weather conditions. Coastal areas of Tamil Nadu experienced high tides and rough seas.
Heavy rainfall was also reported in several districts of Tamil Nadu, including Kallakurichi and Tiruvallur, with the IMD warning of flash floods in suburban areas. Several areas experienced waterlogging and inundated subways, leading to traffic disruptions. The IMD predicted that the cyclone would weaken into a deep depression within hours.
While Tamil Nadu Revenue and Disaster Management Minister KKSSR Ramachandran reported no immediate reports of major damage, a full assessment is expected on Sunday. The IMD continues to monitor the situation and provide updates. Neighboring states like Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Karnataka are also experiencing the indirect effects of the cyclone, with warnings issued for heavy rainfall in various districts.
