Sat Nov 30 19:22:19 UTC 2024: ## Nepal Grapples with HIV/AIDS: Experts Call for Increased Awareness and Access to Healthcare

**Kathmandu, Nepal** – Nepal continues to face a significant challenge in combating HIV/AIDS, despite global progress in prevention and treatment. The Annapurna Express spoke with several experts who highlighted the urgent need for increased awareness campaigns and improved access to healthcare to curb the spread of the disease.

While HIV/AIDS is primarily transmitted sexually, the stigma surrounding the disease in Nepal prevents open discussion and contributes to its prevalence, particularly among vulnerable populations involved in sex work. Experts emphasized that unprotected sex with multiple partners is a major driver of transmission.

Beyond sexual transmission, the interviewees stressed the importance of educating the public about other avenues of infection, including blood transfusions, needle sharing, and mother-to-child transmission through breastfeeding. A lack of awareness about these transmission methods contributes to the high death rate, they argued.

The experts unanimously called for a multifaceted approach, including:

* **Expanded public awareness campaigns:** Educating the population about HIV/AIDS transmission, prevention methods (including safe sex practices), and available healthcare resources.
* **Improved access to healthcare:** Ensuring readily available testing, treatment, and support services for those affected by HIV/AIDS.
* **Addressing the stigma:** Creating a more open and accepting environment to encourage people to seek help without fear of judgment.

The ongoing challenge underscores the need for comprehensive and sustained efforts to tackle this critical public health issue in Nepal.
