DHARWAD, Karnataka – Former Chief Justice of India Dhananjay Y. Chandrachud addressed the Sixth Annual Convocation of Karnataka State Law University (KSLU) on Friday, November 29th, 2024, urging graduating students to cultivate diverse skills to thrive in an increasingly complex and competitive legal landscape. He emphasized the importance of originality, advising students against mimicking peers and instead forging their own paths.

Justice Chandrachud voiced his disapproval of ranking law schools, stating that such classifications lack logical basis. He highlighted the multifaceted identity of India, emphasizing the nation’s ability to preserve diverse cultural, regional, and religious identities as key to its social fabric.

The convocation ceremony saw 5,234 candidates receive law degrees and doctoral degrees, with top performers awarded gold medals and prizes. Honorary doctoral degrees were conferred upon Justice Chandrachud, former Karnataka Chief Minister Veerappa Moily, and former High Court Judge Justice Ashok Hinchigeri. Mr. Moily and Justice Hinchigeri addressed the gathering following the conferral.

Karnataka’s Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, H.K. Patil, announced the state government’s initiative to establish 100 “grama nyayalas” (village courts) by the year’s end to improve access to justice. Justice Chandrachud concluded his address by reminding the graduating class that passion and wide-ranging knowledge are crucial for success in the legal field.
