Wed Nov 27 11:52:00 UTC 2024: ## Sri Lanka’s New Parliament to Debate Key Policies and Budget
**Colombo, Sri Lanka – November 27, 2024** – Sri Lanka’s newly elected parliament, dominated by the National People’s Power (NPP) party, will hold crucial debates next week. The first will center on the government’s policy statement, presented by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, which will be followed by a vote on December 3rd and 4th. This marks the first policy discussion under the NPP government following their landslide victory in the November parliamentary elections.
A second key debate, concerning the interim vote on account for the first four months of 2025, is scheduled for December 5th and 6th, preceding parliamentary approval. This interim measure will pave the way for the formal presentation of the 2025 budget on February 17th.
The NPP secured a historic 159 out of 225 seats in the recent election, forming the 10th parliament since 1978. President Dissanayake’s policy statement emphasizes the ongoing International Monetary Fund (IMF) economic recovery program as a cornerstone of his economic policy. The government recently secured approval for the program’s third review, with the fourth tranche expected soon. Furthermore, the President stressed his government’s commitment to tackling corruption, with several cases against officials from the previous regime having been reopened.
