Thu Nov 28 02:08:41 UTC 2024: ## England Bowlers Fail to Capitalize on Advantageous Toss in Christchurch Test

**Christchurch, New Zealand –** England’s hopes for a strong start in the first test against New Zealand were hampered by inconsistent bowling on day one. Despite winning the toss and electing to bowl first on a green pitch at Hagley Oval, England failed to fully exploit the conditions, allowing New Zealand to reach 104-2 at lunch.

Captain Ben Stokes’ decision to bowl first seemed promising, given the green pitch. However, the English bowlers lacked consistency in line and length, allowing New Zealand opener Tom Latham to score a quick 47 before being dismissed. Latham’s aggressive batting helped New Zealand take the upper hand in the first session. Kane Williamson (26 not out) and Rachin Ravindra (21 not out) were at the crease at the lunch break.

England did enjoy early success when Gus Atkinson took a stunning catch to dismiss Devon Conway in only the second over. However, much of the early bowling was too short and wide, allowing Latham to effectively punish the loose deliveries. Williamson, returning from injury, initially played cautiously before accelerating towards the end of the session. His cover drive and pull shots highlighted his class as New Zealand reached the century mark.

Brydon Carse eventually dismissed Latham, but the inconsistent bowling performance continued to plague England. The English bowlers also struggled with their footing on the slightly damp pitch. England also handed a test debut to 21-year-old Jacob Bethell, who will bat at number three. The wicketkeeping duties fell to Ollie Pope after Jordan Cox suffered a broken thumb in training.
