Wed Nov 27 18:31:59 UTC 2024: ## Rain Drastically Cuts Short First Day of SA-SL Test Match

**Durban, South Africa** – Rain significantly disrupted the first day of the first Test match between South Africa and Sri Lanka at Kingsmead, leaving the hosts struggling at 80/4 when play was abandoned early. Only 20.4 overs were possible before persistent downpours forced an early lunch and ultimately, the cancellation of the day’s play.

Sri Lanka’s bowlers dominated the limited play, with Lahiru Kumara taking two crucial wickets in successive overs. Kumara was unlucky to be denied a third wicket due to a no-ball. The South African openers fell cheaply, but Temba Bavuma and Kyle Verreynne provided some late resistance, leaving the Proteas with a challenging task for Day 2.

The initial session saw South Africa lose both openers within three overs to the Fernando brothers. Bavuma, despite surviving two close calls, showed determination and remained unbeaten on 28 at the lunch break. However, Kumara’s strikes disrupted any attempts at a strong start by South Africa.

Organizers announced that the remaining days of the Test will feature extended sessions to compensate for the lost time. The first two sessions will be extended by 15 minutes, and the last session by 30 minutes.

While the forecast for the remaining days is more promising, both teams face a race against time to ensure a conclusive result, as a draw would benefit neither side. Play resumes at 7:30 am GMT on Day 2.
