Wed Nov 27 23:30:48 UTC 2024: ## Williamson’s Return Costs Young Place in New Zealand’s First Test Against England

**Christchurch, New Zealand –** New Zealand has sprung a surprise ahead of the first Test against England, dropping in-form batsman Will Young despite his recent Player of the Series award against India. Young’s omission makes way for the return of former captain Kane Williamson, who has recovered from a groin injury.

The first Test, starting Thursday, November 28th at Hagley Oval, will also see the Test debut of fast bowler Nathan Smith. Smith beat out Jacob Duffy for the fourth seamer’s spot in the XI.

Captain Tom Latham confirmed the selection decisions, praising Young’s performance in India but highlighting the impact of Williamson’s return. “He (Young) played fantastically well over in India and did a great job for us, but unfortunately, it’s a tough call,” Latham stated, “Having someone like Kane come back in boosts your side.”

Young, the top run-scorer in the recent 3-0 series victory over India with 244 runs, will be a notable absentee as New Zealand aims to secure a place in the World Test Championship Final. While the full playing XI wasn’t revealed, the inclusion of Williamson and Smith indicates a blend of experience and new talent in the Blackcaps’ approach to the series. The confirmed players include: Tom Latham (c), Devon Conway, Kane Williamson, Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Blundell (wk), Glenn Phillips, Nathan Smith, Matt Henry, Tim Southee, Will O’Rourke.
