Wed Nov 27 15:37:14 UTC 2024: ## Bihar Village Maintains 300-Year-Old Vegetarian Tradition

**Gaya, Bihar:** Bihiain, a village in Bihar’s Gaya district, is drawing attention for its unique and unwavering adherence to a vegetarian lifestyle, a tradition maintained for over three centuries. The approximately 400 residents, across Rajput and Yadav households, attribute their commitment to the reverence of Brahma Baba, a local deity whose blessings they believe protect the village from hardship.

For generations, the villagers have abstained not only from meat but also from onions and garlic, a practice deeply embedded in their cultural and spiritual beliefs. This dedication, passed down through generations, has solidified a strong sense of community and made Bihiain renowned as a “Vegetarian Village.”

While the tradition remains largely intact, subtle shifts are beginning to emerge, particularly among younger generations, with some households incorporating onions and garlic into their diets. However, the core values of vegetarianism and respect for Brahma Baba continue to unite the community.

“Our village’s vegetarianism is linked to our prohibition of alcohol, onions, and garlic – all rooted in our beliefs,” explained villager Ran Vijay Singh. He added that Brahma Baba, enshrined in the village’s Brahma Sthan, is believed to protect Bihiain from calamities and ensure its prosperity, attracting pilgrims from afar.

Kishori Singh, another villager, acknowledged the influence of modern trends but emphasized the enduring strength of their core traditions. The village’s unique practices, a testament to collective discipline and cultural unity, have piqued the interest of cultural enthusiasts and researchers studying the intersection of religious beliefs and dietary customs.
