**Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, November 27, 2024** – Heavy rainfall inundated parts of Tamil Nadu’s delta districts on Wednesday, prompting authorities to launch widespread relief operations. Moderate to heavy downpours were reported across the region, with some areas experiencing significant flooding. Mayiladuthurai district saw particularly heavy rainfall, with Sirkazhi taluk receiving 4.3 cm, Sembanarkoil 3.9 cm, and Tharangambadi 3.2 cm. Similarly, Nagapattinam district recorded substantial rainfall, with Kilvelur receiving 5.3 cm.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been deployed in Sirkazhi to assist with water removal efforts. In Nagapattinam, authorities have placed 4,000 electric poles, 75 km of electric lines, and 200 transformers on standby to mitigate power outages. The district hospital has mobilized eight ambulances, and generators have been deployed at health centers. Over 300 Aapda Mitra volunteers and 5,000 first responders are prepared to assist.
Tamil Nadu School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi visited Nagapattinam, inspecting relief camps and distributing aid to affected residents. He confirmed that schools will remain closed until floodwaters recede completely. In Nagapattinam alone, 160 families were relocated to temporary camps due to flooding. The Minister interacted with residents, listening to their concerns and providing essential supplies.
In Karaikal, approximately 50-60 people were moved to relief centers due to flooding in low-lying areas. Authorities have 176 relief centers on standby, along with over 100 trained local youth equipped for emergencies. Puducherry’s Education Minister A. Namassivayam announced a school and college holiday for both Karaikal and Puducherry due to the severe weather. Tiruchirappalli city also experienced moderate to heavy rainfall. The situation remains fluid, with authorities continuing their relief and rescue efforts.
