**New Delhi, November 27, 2024** – India’s livestock sector experienced significant growth in 2023-24, with substantial increases in milk, egg, and meat production, according to a new report released by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying.
The report reveals a 3.78% rise in milk production, reaching an estimated 239.30 million tonnes – a 5.62% compound annual growth over the last decade. Uttar Pradesh led milk production, contributing 16.21% of the national total, followed by Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. West Bengal showed the highest annual growth rate at 9.76%.
Egg production also soared, reaching an estimated 142.77 billion, reflecting a 6.8% compound annual growth over the past 10 years. Andhra Pradesh was the top egg producer, followed by Tamil Nadu, Telangana, West Bengal, and Karnataka.
Meat production increased to 10.25 million tonnes, a 4.85% compound annual growth over the last 10 years. Poultry accounted for the majority (48.96%) of meat production. West Bengal led in overall meat production, followed by Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh. Assam recorded the highest annual growth rate in meat production at 17.93%.
Wool production saw a slight increase of 0.22% to 33.69 million kg, with Rajasthan contributing the largest share (47.53%).
The report highlights India’s leading global position in milk production and its second-place ranking in egg production. These positive trends underscore the significant contribution of the livestock sector to the Indian economy.
