Wed Nov 27 01:57:04 UTC 2024: ## US-Brokered Ceasefire Brings End to Two-Month Israel-Hezbollah War

**BEIRUT/JERUSALEM** – A two-month war between Israel and the Iran-backed Lebanese militant group Hezbollah has ended with a US and French-brokered ceasefire, effective Wednesday at 2:00 AM GMT. The agreement calls for a phased Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon over the next 60 days, contingent upon the Lebanese army’s deployment to the area.

The ceasefire, announced by a senior US official, stipulates that Hezbollah must withdraw from the border region north of the Litani River, ceasing all hostilities. President Biden emphasized that Hezbollah’s terrorist infrastructure in southern Lebanon will not be rebuilt. The US, alongside France and other allies, will monitor the implementation of the deal and provide support to the Lebanese army, though this will not involve US ground troops. However, Israel retains the right to self-defense if the agreement is violated.

A tripartite mechanism, including UNIFIL, Israel, and Lebanon (now chaired by the US), will oversee communications and address any violations to prevent escalation. A military committee from several nations will offer additional support to the Lebanese army in terms of equipment, training, and finances.

The US official expressed optimism that the ceasefire presents an opportunity for Lebanon to reassert its sovereignty. The 60-day period will allow the Lebanese army to regain control of its southern territory, marking a potential “new start” for the country, according to President Biden.

The agreement could also impact the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The US official believes that Hezbollah’s decision to cease fighting could weaken Hamas’ position and potentially pave the way for a Gaza ceasefire and the return of hostages. The official suggested that Hamas may now realize a lack of widespread support for their October 7th attacks on Israel.
