Tue Nov 26 20:10:05 UTC 2024: ## Israel and Lebanon Agree to Ceasefire, Aiding Israeli Focus on Iran and Hamas Isolation
**Beirut/Jerusalem –** A fragile ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon came into effect at midnight (Israel time) on November 27th, ending months of escalating conflict. The agreement, brokered with the assistance of the United States and France, was announced by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu following a Security Cabinet meeting. While celebrating the deal, Netanyahu emphasized that the war against Hamas in Gaza continues and that the ceasefire is a tactical maneuver, not an end to hostilities.
Netanyahu cited three key reasons for the ceasefire: the need to focus resources on countering Iranian threats; the necessity to resupply and rest Israeli forces, acknowledging delays in weapons deliveries; and the strategic goal of isolating Hamas by removing Hezbollah from the conflict. He stressed that Israel’s objectives—eliminating Hamas, securing the release of hostages, and ensuring Gaza no longer poses a threat—remain unchanged.
The ceasefire agreement includes stipulations requiring Hezbollah and other Lebanese militant groups to cease offensive operations against Israel, in exchange for a halt to Israeli offensive actions in Lebanon. Both sides acknowledge UN Security Council Resolution 1701, and the right to self-defense is preserved. Importantly, the Lebanese government will be responsible for controlling weapons and dismantling unauthorized military sites. A joint committee will oversee the implementation of the agreement, with reports to UNIFIL. Israel will withdraw from areas south of the Blue Line over the next 60 days. The US will facilitate indirect negotiations on land border demarcation between Israel and Lebanon.
The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah began several months ago, escalating from years of smaller attacks. The broader regional war ignited in October 2023 when Hamas launched a major attack on Israel from Gaza, taking hostages. Tens of thousands have died in the ensuing conflict. While celebrating this ceasefire, Netanyahu warned that any violation by Hezbollah would result in a forceful Israeli response. US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron are expected to issue a joint statement shortly.
