Wed Nov 27 08:17:47 UTC 2024: ## Olympic Wrestling Medalist Bajrang Punia Banned for Four Years
**NEW DELHI** – Olympic bronze medalist Bajrang Punia has been banned from wrestling for four years by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) for allegedly refusing a doping test. The 30-year-old, a prominent figure in the protests against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh earlier this year, maintains his innocence.
Punia, who won bronze at the Tokyo Olympics, was initially provisionally suspended in March after allegedly refusing to provide a urine sample. While the suspension was briefly lifted, NADA announced a four-year ban on Tuesday. Punia claims he was hesitant due to concerns about the testing kit’s expiry date.
The ban comes amidst a backdrop of widespread protests led by India’s top wrestlers, including Punia, against Singh, a politician from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party. The wrestlers accused Singh of sexual harassment, allegations he vehemently denied. Punia has alleged the doping ban is retaliatory for his participation in the protests.
The high-profile case shines a light on India’s struggle with doping. According to the World Anti-Doping Agency, India recorded the highest number of doping violations globally in 2022. Since the protests, Punia and fellow Olympian Vinesh Phogat have joined the opposition Congress Party. The outcome of Punia’s case is expected to have significant ramifications for the sport in India, where wrestling enjoys immense popularity.
