Wed Nov 27 10:37:08 UTC 2024: **Maharashtra Coalition Wins Big, But Chief Minister’s Seat Sparks Tensions**
MUMBAI, INDIA – The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition secured a landslide victory in the recent Maharashtra Assembly elections, winning 230 seats. The BJP won 132 seats, Shiv Sena 57, and NCP 41. However, the celebratory atmosphere is overshadowed by intense negotiations over the Chief Minister’s post.
The BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP are all vying for the top position, with Devendra Fadnavis, Ajit Pawar, and Eknath Shinde as the main contenders. While all three parties have stated that they will accept the decision of Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Shah, tensions are evident.
Sources suggest that Eknath Shinde is unhappy about Devendra Fadnavis being the frontrunner for the Chief Minister’s post. Several Shiv Sena leaders have openly voiced their support for Shinde, asserting that he deserves the position given the party’s role in the election victory. Shiv Sena spokesperson Sanjay Sirsat stated the election was fought on Shinde’s face and that he is the rightful candidate. He further emphasized that Shinde’s leadership contributed significantly to the coalition’s success.
Shinde himself addressed the situation on X (formerly Twitter), appealing for calm and thanking his supporters while discouraging large gatherings in Mumbai.
Meanwhile, a senior BJP leader revealed to the Indian Express that the party’s top leadership has informed Shinde and Pawar of their decision to appoint Fadnavis as Chief Minister, with a formal announcement expected soon at a BJP state legislature meeting in Mumbai. The BJP leader emphasized that with 132 seats, giving up the Chief Minister’s post is not an option, citing the 2022 precedent where Fadnavis had to step down for Shinde. BJP sources indicate efforts are being made to appease Shinde with key ministerial portfolios in the state and possibly a central role. The ongoing negotiations highlight the complexities of coalition politics and the potential for power struggles within the victorious alliance.
