**Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala –** Priyanka Gandhi Vadra secured a resounding victory in her maiden electoral contest, winning the Wayanad Lok Sabha by-election by a massive margin exceeding 6 lakh votes. This surpasses her brother Rahul Gandhi’s previous record in the constituency. The Congress-led UDF also secured wins in the Palakkad Assembly seat, with Rahul Mamkootathil winning by 18,715 votes, and the Chelakkara Assembly seat, with U R Pradeep emerging victorious.
The results are being seen as a significant boost for the Congress party and the broader INDIA bloc, particularly after recent setbacks in Haryana. While the by-elections do not impact state governance, they provide a crucial benchmark for the Congress’s electoral prospects. Priyanka Gandhi’s campaign focused on local issues such as farmer concerns and landslide rehabilitation, alongside national themes. Her extensive campaigning, exceeding that of her brother in previous elections, is credited with contributing to her substantial win.
Despite a lower than expected voter turnout in Wayanad, Priyanka Gandhi’s final vote share exceeded 64%, significantly outpacing her rivals, Sathyan Mokeri of the LDF and Navy Haridas of the BJP. Celebrations erupted amongst UDF leaders following the announcement of the results.
The Palakkad by-election saw a closer contest, with Congress securing victory against the BJP’s C Krishnakumar. The Chelakkara Assembly by-election also saw a win for the ruling LDF. The outcomes of these by-elections will be closely analyzed for their implications in the lead-up to the upcoming general elections.
