**Chennai, November 23, 2024** – The Madras High Court is taking proactive steps to address the escalating problem of violence between college students in Chennai. The initiative follows a murder case where students from Pachaiyappa’s College allegedly chased and killed a Presidency College student. The incident, stemming from inter-college rivalry during commutes, prompted Justice A.D. Jagadish Chandira to intervene.
The court will hear submissions from various stakeholders on November 26th, including the Higher Education Department Secretary, the Students Federation of India (SFI), college faculty, and NGOs like Satta Panchayat Iyakkam (SPI). Justice Chandira noted the tragic impact on the families of both the victim and the accused, highlighting the recurring nature of such incidents.
The Government Advocate revealed that 22 similar cases are pending in Chennai police stations. The SFI expressed its willingness to assist in finding a solution, while SPI also intends to offer suggestions. The court’s suo motu impleading of the Higher Education Secretary underscores the seriousness of the issue and the court’s determination to find a lasting solution to curb inter-college violence. Previous suggestions from a Pachaiyappa’s College professor to prevent such violence will also be considered.
