LOS ANGELES (November 24, 2024) – Grammy-winning rapper Kendrick Lamar surprised fans Friday with the release of his sixth studio album, “GNX.” The 12-track album marks Lamar’s first new release since 2022’s “Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers,” and follows his highly publicized rap battle with Drake earlier this year.
“GNX” features collaborations with several notable producers, including Jack Antonoff (co-producing all but one track), Sounwave, and DJ Mustard, the latter two contributing to the Drake diss track, “Not Like Us.” The album also includes appearances by SZA on tracks “Gloria” and “Luther,” the latter sampling Luther Vandross and Cheryl Lynn.
Lyrically, the album touches on Lamar’s recent experiences, referencing his Super Bowl Halftime Show performance, Snoop Dogg’s social media activity regarding Drake’s diss track, and Lil Wayne’s reaction to not headlining the Super Bowl. The opening track, “Wacced Out Murals,” finds Lamar reflecting on cruising in his Buick GNX while listening to Anita Baker.
The surprise album release caps a successful year for Lamar, which includes his appearance on the Billboard Hot 100 number one hit “Like That” and seven Grammy nominations for “Not Like Us,” including Record and Song of the Year. This is the second year Lamar has two entries in the Best Rap Performance category, a career first.
