**NEW DELHI** – Vote counting is underway for by-elections across India, covering 48 assembly seats in 14 states and two Lok Sabha seats. The most closely watched race is in Wayanad, Kerala, where Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is making her electoral debut. As of 10:50 am, early results show Priyanka Gandhi significantly ahead with over 2.26 lakh votes, maintaining a margin of over 1 lakh votes against her nearest rival, CPI’s Sathyan Mokeri. The BJP’s Navya Haridas is trailing in third place. Her brother, Rahul Gandhi, who previously held the Wayanad seat, has been actively campaigning for her.
By-elections were also held in Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. The results from six West Bengal assembly seats are particularly anticipated, serving as a test for the ruling Trinamool Congress amidst ongoing protests related to the RG Kar rape and murder case. The TMC aims to continue its winning streak from the 2021 assembly elections. The overall results of these by-elections are expected to provide valuable insights into the current political landscape.
