**New Delhi, India** – Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has secured a resounding victory in the Wayanad Lok Sabha by-election, exceeding her brother Rahul Gandhi’s previous margin. The by-election, held alongside 48 state assembly bypolls across 14 states and another Lok Sabha seat in Maharashtra, saw a significant win for the Congress party.
Early results show Gandhi leading with over 6.22 lakh votes, a margin of over 4 lakh votes – surpassing Rahul Gandhi’s 2019 record of 3.65 lakh votes. Her closest rival, Sathyan Mokeri of the Communist Party of India, garnered over 2.11 lakh votes, while the BJP’s Navya Haridas trailed with nearly 1.09 lakh votes. The by-election was necessitated after Rahul Gandhi won both Wayanad and Rae Bareli in the general elections and chose to retain the latter seat. Rahul Gandhi actively campaigned for his sister, highlighting her dedication and potential to serve the constituency.
Voter turnout in Wayanad was approximately 65%, a decrease from the 74% recorded in April’s general elections and considerably lower than the 80%+ turnout in 2019.
Meanwhile, vote counting is underway for 48 assembly seats across 14 states, including Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. Particular interest surrounds the results of six West Bengal assembly seats, where the ruling Trinamool Congress faces a test amidst ongoing protests related to the RG Kar rape and murder case. The TMC aims to continue its post-2021 winning streak, broken only by the Sagardighi bypoll earlier this year. The final results for all by-elections are eagerly awaited.
