**Jaipur, Rajasthan, November 23, 2024** – A thick blanket of smog, originating from the National Capital Region (NCR), has severely impacted air quality in eastern Rajasthan, forcing authorities to take action. Schools in Khairthal-Tijara district have shifted to online classes for students in grades 1-5 until Saturday due to alarmingly high pollution levels. The move follows a Supreme Court directive and comes amidst criticism of the government’s response.
Air quality index (AQI) readings have soared, reaching 500 in Bhiwadi and 300 in Alwar. The smog, exacerbated by cold weather and northern winds, has significantly reduced sunlight and visibility in several districts, including Alwar, Bharatpur, Deeg, Khairthal-Tijara, and Kotputli-Behror. To combat the crisis, mining operations, stone crushing, and brick kilns have been temporarily shut down, along with construction projects.
Opposition leader Tika Ram Jully criticized both the Union and State governments for their “indifference” to the worsening pollution, noting that both the Union and State environment ministers were elected from Alwar. He demanded an immediate action plan to improve air quality in the Aravalli Hills region and address the plight of daily wage earners affected by the shutdown. Mr. Jully highlighted the lack of government support for these workers, who have lost their income due to the pollution control measures. He warned of a looming threat to the Aravalli Range and agricultural lands due to the severe pollution.
