**Montevideo, Uruguay –** Uruguayans will head to the polls this Sunday, November 24th, for a crucial presidential runoff election. The race pits leftist Yamandu Orsi of the Frente Amplio (Broad Front) coalition against center-right candidate Alvaro Delgado of the National Party.
Orsi, a former history teacher and protégé of former President José Mujica, secured 43.9% of the vote in the first round on October 27th, falling short of the majority needed to avoid a runoff. Delgado, a former veterinarian, received 26.7%. The two emerged as frontrunners from a field of eleven candidates vying to succeed President Luis Lacalle Pou, who is constitutionally barred from seeking re-election.
Current polls suggest a close contest, with Orsi holding a slim lead. Delgado has received a boost from other parties within the Republican Coalition, strengthening his position. Despite President Lacalle Pou’s relatively high approval ratings, concerns about crime and taxes, which fueled the right-wing victory in 2020, remain key issues for voters. Recent polling indicates that insecurity is the top concern for Uruguayans.
Orsi, addressing supporters at a recent rally, expressed confidence in his ability to implement necessary changes for the country. Delgado, meanwhile, highlighted the Republican Coalition’s accomplishments during its time in power.
A victory for Orsi would mark a return to leftist rule after five years of conservative governance in the South American nation. The Frente Amplio held the presidency for three consecutive terms before losing in 2020. Their previous administration saw the legalization of abortion and same-sex marriage, a ban on public smoking, and the pioneering legalization of recreational cannabis use. Voting is compulsory in Uruguay.
