**MENLO PARK, CA** – Instagram is rolling out a new feature allowing users to completely reset their algorithm, giving them greater control over their feed content. This move, announced by parent company Meta on November 19th, is specifically designed to improve the safety and well-being of teenage users.
The new feature allows users to reset recommendations across the Explore, Reels, and Feed tabs with a few simple taps. This provides a “fresh start,” breaking away from previously suggested content and allowing the algorithm to learn new preferences based on subsequent interactions. Users can further refine suggestions by marking content as “interested” or “not interested.” While the reset cannot be undone, users can also review their followed accounts and unfollow those sharing unwanted content.
This update comes in response to growing concerns about social media’s impact on adolescent mental health. Studies, including research published in the *Journal of the American Medical Association*, have linked excessive social media use to increased risks of depression and anxiety. Meta hopes this tool will empower teens to curate a more positive and age-appropriate Instagram experience.
Although currently in a testing phase, Instagram plans to make the algorithm reset feature available globally. The company states this builds upon existing tools for content curation, offering teens more agency in shaping their online experience.
