**Mumbai, India –** As the dust settles on the Maharashtra Assembly elections, a major controversy has erupted over allegations that funds from a 2018 cryptocurrency fraud were used to finance election campaigns. Former IPS officer Ravindranath Patil alleges that bitcoins seized during the investigation of a multi-crore ponzi scheme were misappropriated and used to fund the campaigns of NCP(SP) leader Supriya Sule and Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole.
Patil, who himself was arrested and later released on bail in connection with the case, claims that an expert witness, Gaurav Mehta, revealed the alleged misappropriation, providing voice notes and evidence suggesting the bitcoins were sold and the proceeds channeled through hawala channels to the politicians. These allegations were amplified by BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi, who held a press conference releasing purported audio clips related to the accusations.
Both Sule and Patole vehemently deny the allegations and have filed complaints with the Election Commission (EC) and the cyber crime department. While Sule’s complaint was reportedly not received by authorities, the Maharashtra Congress claims to have filed a complaint on Patole’s behalf, though police say they haven’t received it either.
Adding fuel to the fire, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, Sule’s cousin, claimed to recognize the voices in the audio clips as Sule’s and a colleague’s. However, Yugendra Pawar, Sule’s nephew and political rival, disputes this.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED), which is investigating the original cryptocurrency fraud, conducted searches at Mehta’s residence. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has also summoned Mehta for questioning. Patil has also stated his intention to file a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the High Court.
The allegations have injected a new level of drama into the post-election scene, with both the BJP and the opposition embroiled in a war of words and accusations. The EC is now under pressure to investigate the matter thoroughly.
