**CHENNAI, November 20, 2024** – Two of Chennai’s most cherished libraries, the Madras Literary Society and the Goschen Hall branch library, are slated for significant restoration projects, set to begin within weeks. The Public Works Department (PWD) will undertake the ₹8.55 crore restoration effort, with completion expected within a year.
The Madras Literary Society library, a single-story structure dating back to 1812 and located in the Nungambakkam neighborhood, will receive ₹6.19 crore in funding. The building, which has suffered 40-50% damage, including leaks in the Madras Terrace roof and cracks in the brick masonry walls, will undergo extensive repairs. This includes replastering brick walls, fixing decayed wooden beams and teakwood panels, and renewing damaged ornamental cornices. The library, known for its tranquil atmosphere and vintage charm, has even appeared in several films.
Meanwhile, the Goschen Hall branch library in Chintadripet, a structure built in the classical architectural style, will receive ₹2.36 crore for its restoration. Approximately 70% damaged, the library’s Madras Terrace roof needs complete repair and the wall plastering requires redoing. Originally laid in 1926 as the Rao Sahib P. Vijayaragavulu Chetty’s public library, it was later renamed after Lady Goschen.
The PWD’s Building Centre and Conservation Division (BCCD) will oversee both projects, marking a significant investment in preserving Chennai’s rich literary heritage.
